it is finished

I have a confession to make: I was feeling a little sorry for myself this weekend…I was missing my family.  It is difficult living away from my mom, my kids and grandlittles, extended family and friends, wishing I could be there to celebrate holidays and birthdays with them, to cry with them and hug them in their difficult times. But as I had my private pity party I was reminded that, though it’s tough for me to be separated from my family as I serve Him, it is a small price in light of all He has done and continues to do for me.  My Heavenly Father gave up His only begotten Son that we might spend eternity with Him, in the ultimate expression of His love for us!

As I contemplated this wonderful gift, the song, “Glorious Day,” was brought to mind.  I appreciate the progression of the Lord’s purpose in becoming a “little lower than the angels” (Hebrews 2:9)

Living, He loved me.  He dwelt among men with one purpose in mind: to die for a lost and broken world. In the meantime, He lived a perfect and sinless life.  He miraculously healed the sick and loved the outcasts. He confronted hypocrisy and forgave the sins of the repentant.  He lived as the perfect example to me, showing me how to truly love others and how to live a life of obedience.

Dying, He saved me.  He willingly offered Himself a living sacrifice for my sin.  He, who was  sinless, took my sins and yours and paid the price for them–“the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).  They mocked Him, beat Him, nailed Him to a cross. The earth was clothed in darkness as the Father turned away from the Son.  “It is finished,” He said (John 19:30). The debt is paid in full. He saved me from eternal separation from God, hell–eternal death.

Buried, He carried my sins far away. They placed Him in a tomb, sealed it with a great stone, determined to prove that this was not the Messiah. For three days and three nights He remained in the grave.  He bore my shame and separation from the Father for me. And now, my sins are “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12)

Rising, He justified freely forever. The grave could not hold him! On the third day, the stone was rolled away, the tomb was empty…He had risen from the dead, just as He’d said!  (Matthew 28:1-6)  He’s alive…a risen Saviour! He has conquered death and now I am justified by Him–declared righteous before God, because Christ has paid my debt.  It’s a  gift, given freely from Him and He gives us the security of knowing that once we accept this gift, it is ours forever (Romans 3:24).

One day He’s coming, Oh Glorious Day!  He is coming back! (Matthew 24:31)  He will reign and bring perfect peace to this sad, old world. (Revelation 22:12)

If you’d like to hear  this beautiful song, this link will take you to a Casting Crowns live video of the piece.  (I hope adding this link is acceptable…still learning the ins and outs of blogging etiquette.)
